The Church - The House of God

The House of God (verses from the Bible)

Introduction

There is much confusion about what the church is and especially what the term 'House of God" means. It is false to refer to the building in which corporate worship takes place as the house of God – it is not and never will be. He does not live in buildings made by men’s hands for He lives in the hearts of believers. Since this is the case, what is the 'House of God"?

I draw your attention to two books on the Church which are useful for the student of the Bible

The Church. What is it? (WTP Wolston) <http://www.stempublishing.com/authors/wolston/>

Another Comforter (WTP Wolston) <http://www.stempublishing.com/authors/wolston/>

Both accessed 10 February 2008.

Both books were published by Bible Truth Publishers in the USA, but available from various Bible and tract depots in Australia.

The House of God

These are verses from the Bible that explain the use of the term 'House of God".

1 Timothy 3:15 (NKJV)
……I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Isaiah 6:7 (NKJV)

Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, And make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices Will be accepted on My altar;."

The Beginning

Matthew 16:13 - 20 (NKJV)

13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, 'Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"

14 So they said, 'Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

15 He said to them, 'But who do you say that I am?"

16 Simon Peter answered and said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

17Jesus answered and said to him, 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

John 11:27 (NKJV) i.e. Raising of Lazarus

She [Martha] said to Him, 'Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."

Matthew 18:20 (NKJV)

For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them."

Definition of 'church"

εκκλησία (ekklēsia, ek-klay-see'-ah) Strong’s G1577

The Greek indicates the word is derived from words meaning: a calling out, that is, (concretely) a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation (Jewish  synagogue, or Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or  both):—assembly, church

Συνάγω (sunagō soon-ag'-o) Strong’s G4864

From two Greek words; to lead together, that is, collect or convene; specifically to entertain (hospitably):—+ accompany, assemble (selves, together), bestow, come together, gather (selves together, up, together), lead into, resort, take in.

σῶμα (soôma so'-mah)  Strong’s G4983

Meaning the body (as a sound whole), used in a very wide application, literally or figuratively:—bodily, body, slave. (As in 1 Corinthians 12:13)

Purpose

To gather all together unto Christ, both Jew and Gentile, slave and free into one body with Christ as the head.

Ephesians 1:9 - 1:10 (NKJV)

9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him.

1 Corinthians 12:12 - 15 (NKJV)

12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptised into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many. 15 If the foot should say, 'Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body?……..

Galatians 3:28 (NKJV)

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

The House of God

God's building are persons each being the temple of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 3:9 - 15 (NKJV)

9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building.

10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

1 Corinthians 3:16 - 17 (NKJV)

16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

Foreshadows – elements of the house found in the Old Testament

Exodus 25:8 (NKJV)

And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.

A new beginning – revealed in the New Testament

Ephesians 2:19 - 22 (NKJV)

19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

The house is built on a Solid Rock

The solid foundation

Psalms 18:2 (DNT)

Jehovah is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my rock, in whom I will trust; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.

1 Corinthians 10:4 (NKJV)

and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.

Ephesians 2:20 (NKJV)

20……Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone,

Psalms 118:22 (NKJV)

22 The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone.

Living Stones that make up the House of God

1 Peter. 2:4-6 (NKJV)

4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Ephesians. 2:21 (NKJV)

in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord

1 Corinthians. 3:16-17 (NKJV)

16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

The Character of the House of God

Ephesians 2:22 (NKJV)

in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

….for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

For by one Spirit we were all baptised into one body

1 Timothy 3:14 - 16 (NKJV)

14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

John 14:6 (NKJV)

Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

The Character of the 'Stones"

1 Pet. 2:5-6 (NKJV)

you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Rev. 1:6 (NKJV)

and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

1 Corinthians 3:9 - 15 (NKJV)

9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. 10………But let each one take heed how he builds on it.

2 Timothy 2:20 - 2:22 (NKJV)

20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honour and some for dishonour. 21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honour, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. 22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Holiness

1 Corinthians 1:2 (NIV)

To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours

Eph. 1:4 (NKJV)

just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,

Heb. 3:1 (NKJV)

Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus,

Heb. 12:14 (DNT)

Pursue peace with all, and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord:

Rom. 6:19 (NKJV)

I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

Heb. 1:9 (NKJV) (Oil used as a symbol of the Holy Spirit)

You [Jesus] have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions."

Psalm 5:5-6 (NIV) (God hates sin)

The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong.6 You destroy those who tell lies;
