John's Gospel 8: Jesus Christ is the Light of this World

What does light do?

• Light separates, or divides, darkness, for light and darkness have no communion.
• And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. Genesis 1:4 (KJV)
• Physical light is sweet - it brings joy to the heart (Ecc 11:7)
• It reveals or exposes the eternal things
• It ministers to our immortal natures
• It opens our eyes so we can behold sin in its true colours
• It reveals us in our true nature

But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says:
"Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light." Ephesians 5:13-14 (NKJV)

• It delivers our soul

He hath delivered my soul from going into the pit, and my life shall see the light. Job 33:28 (DNT).

Where is light found?

• Jesus is the light (John 8:12).

God is the LORD which hath shown us light (Psm 118:27)

Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)

Our position in the light

You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 1 Thessalonians 5:5 (NKJV)

Our Responsibility

Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Romans 13:12 (NKJV)

We can truly say

Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14 (NKJV)

As Spurgeon writes (Morning and Evening, Jan 5)

God has divided them (light from darkness), let us not confound them. Sons & daughters of light must not have fellowship with deeds, doctrines, or deceits of darkness. The children of the day must be sober, honest, and bold in their Lord's work, leaving the works of darkness to those who shall dwell in it for ever

LOVE reveals whether true light is found in within us (See 1 John 2:1-11)

A person in the light delights to do the commands of the Lord. (See also Psm 112)

He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 1 John 2:9 (NKJV)

 

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. Psalm 1:1-2
