The Power of the Gospel
"I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished! Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division. For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three. Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."
These verses refer to the Gospel of Jesus Christ - as prophesied in these verses, the good news that the blood of Jesus Christ would be sufficient to forgive all sin of an individual would be rejected by a large proportion of the population. Living with the guilt of sin appears to be more preferable than having life after death with Jesus Christ. Indeed what God hates, men now love. Persecution of the early church commenced immediately after the gospel was sheared by the disciples - it continues today - even in Western democracies where most governments are shutting down Christian conversation.
